Council To Build More Elderly Housing
More housing for the elderly is to be built by the Christchurch City Council at a cost of $2.6 million.
The development in Hornby is designed specifically for the elderly and will be close to the library and shops.
The Councils property manager, Rob Dally, says that the complex, yet to be named, will cater for "a cross-section of the community in terms of affordability". Mr Dally says the council will be asked to provide a mix of rental, ownership, and rent-to-own
The council has just notified a resource consent application to build the 23 units. Mr Dally said that once the resource consent and tender price were obtained he expected construction could start about July-August.
Mr Dally said he believed that the high-level of public consultation undertaken two years ago would ease the way for an early start.
Submissions on the resource consent application will close on February 18.
The Council has 2600 flats in more than 100 complexes, most of them for the elderly and invalids, making it the second largest landlord in New Zealand after Housing NZ.
