Beyond Books This Weekend

This weekend Canterbury Public Library is hosting a number of events as part of the >Books & Beyond Festival.\

Author Marlene Bennetts will be talking about the trials and tribulations of self-publishing on Saturday 3 June 10.30 – 11.30am at the New Brighton Library.

  1. Beyond the veil – Tua atu I te aria on Saturday 1 – 2.30pm at the Central Library takes a look at traditional Maori culture and its continuation through new media. It features a number of performers including:
  • Nathan Pohio who will present some of his short films;
  • Ariana Tikao and other musicians performing a contemporary waiata;
  • Matiu Te Huki a writer and performer for the theatre group Te Whanau Puawai who will present Maui and the Sun;
  • Lisa Reihana and her short film A Maori Dragon Story adapted from the ‘Tikao Talks’ book based on the narrations of Teone Taare Tikao;
  • Moana Tipa, a well-known Ngäi Tahu performer and her son Marahia who will combine their talents to present some original waiata in te reo Mäori.
  1. On Sunday 2 – 3pm, Astrologer Judi Johnston will be at the Central Library, presenting Beyond the Stars and revealing what the planets have in store.
  2. Also on Sunday at the Central Library, the New Zealand Guild of Storytellers will present an hour of family storytelling from 2.20 – 3.30pm.
