Best Christchurch Dairy Sought
The search is on to find Christchurchs best-kept dairy.
After the success of the first Cream of the Dairies competition 2 years ago a second Cream of the Dairies Competition is to be held by the Keep Christchurch Beautiful Campaign. The first competition attracted nation-wide interest with Meadow Fresh once again the principal sponsor of this local competition.
Keep Christchurch Beautiful Co-ordinator Ingrid Le Fevre says that in Christchurch, along with the rest of the world, the problem of litter is increasing.
Packaging creates most of the litter on streets, in the parks, and on the beaches.
"Data from the Keep Christchurch Beautiful Campaigns six-monthly litter counts, point to shops and their surroundings to be major contributor to the problem. All kinds of food wrappings are considered to constitute the least acceptable type of litter," Miss Le Fevre says.
The aim of the Cream of the Dairies Competition is being held to reduce litter coming from local dairies. "It will also give recognition to dairy operators who actively serve their community by upgrading, beautifying and maintaining their premises and immediate surroundings."
It is not the intention to blame dairy operators for the litter from careless customers. One of the aims is to make the public aware of the growing problem of littered confectionery packaging.
"It is felt that through the competition, dairy operators will become more aware of the litter problem and will join the fight to manage it".
Assessments of dairies will be made during March and April with the winner and 12 finalists announced in May.
The overall prize-winner will get a certificate and a cheque for $500 from the principal sponsor, Meadow Fresh Foods.
