ANZAC Drive Opened By Former Soldier
Former regular soldier Alan Young cut a red ribbon to open Anzac Drive, between Travis Road and New Brighton Road as part of the Woolston-Burwood Expressway today.
Mr Young of the New Brighton RSA suggested to the Christchurch City Council that the word Anzac be used in the name of the road.
The $4 million stretch of road is the first stage of a $16-million City Council-Transit NZ project.
The chairman of the Councils City Services Committee, Cr. Denis ORourke, said the expressway was intended to take heavy traffic away from suburban streets.
He said more people should use the ring road.
While the expressway was important to the city he said more and more emphasis would be put on roading alternatives in the decades to come. Planning would concentrate on public transport, cycling and walking.
"The people will see more effort put into the promotion of facilities for public transport, and for cycling and walking," Cr. Rourke said.
