Christchurch City Council Media Release

SummerTimes A festival of free entertainment.

3 February 1999

The not-so-famous Five get Valentines Day dancers swinging.

Valentines Day Dance, 8pm to 10pm, Sunday 14 February 1999, Victoria Square

Organisers of the Council’s SummerTimes Valentines Day Dance in Victoria Square won’t be at all surprised if there’s an unusually high attendance of teenage girls at the event.

From the time the SummerTimes brochures were distributed to letterboxes throughout the city prior to Christmas, the council has received a number of calls from hopeful teenagers inquiring about the band playing at the event. Although they share the same name, it will be Christchurch swing band ‘Five’ which will perform - not the famous British pop band of the same name.

And while the news may be disappointing to some, the Valentines Day Dance is likely to be a popular occasion for many others. The event has been a highlight of the SummerTimes festival for a number of years and regularly attracts several thousand people. Five, who have performed previously at the event, will entertain with slick covers of hits such as Copacabana, ‘The Love Boat theme and other popular tunes as well as more traditional numbers to get the audience dancing the night away.

Please note that the Valentines Day Dance is part of the SummerTimes festival, not the Festival of Romance.
