Christchurch City Council Media Release 6 December 1999

Y2K generator backup for sewerage system

Fourteen diesel generators have been hired as a backup power supply for the city’s sewerage system over the New Year period.

This will allow the sewerage system to function in the unlikely event of a problem with the power supply over the New Year period, says Council Y2K Project Manager John de Zwart.

"The establishment of an alternative power supply is just one part of detailed contingency plans the Y2K project has developed over the last year," he says.

The Project is now concentrating its efforts towards contingency planning as it is nearing the end of its Y2K readiness testing programme.

"Our focus now is on contingency planning and making sure we can communicate effectively with Council staff and other organisations over the New Year’s period in the unlikely event of Y2K problems," he says.
