Spell binding time for Square Redevelopment
March sees the start of the forth and final stage of the Christchurch City Councils redevelopment of Cathedral Square. To get Stage 4 off to an auspicious start the Wizard will be in the Square at noon on Tuesday 2 March to cast a positive spell over the work.
Also present at the spell casting will be:
Cr Ron Wright, Chair of Projects and Property, Christchurch City Council
Jeff Mawhinney, Project Liaison Officer, Christchurch City Council
Steve Buckley, Assistant Project Manager, Works Civil Construction (Stage 4 contractor)
(Steve has a primary role in public liaison)
Stage 4, in the southwest corner of the Square and in front of the Cathedral will result in new paving, seating and landscaping. During the Stage 4 period new enhanced lighting will be installed throughout the Square.
Face Lift for Cenotaph Memorial
Also due to start in the Square this week is the final stage of maintenance on the Cenotaph memorial.
Scaffolding will start to go up around the memorial today with the work being undertaken by Peter Maxwell and John Clarke from International Conservation Services to begin late
tomorrow. This work will be on the bronze on the lower half of the memorial (the upper section, the angel, having been undertaken last year) and will take approximately two weeks. For a week following this, a stone mason will undertake pointing and repair work.
The Council will then clean down the memorial using water pulsing to bring the stonework back to its original condition.
The project is expected to take about four weeks.
