Sewerage Pipe Collapses

Residents Should Avoid Heathcote River

A sewerage pipe collapsed unexpectedly yesterday (Thursday) and some sewage has been released into the Heathcote River. The situation has been exacerbated by the heavy rain which means the dual pipe (which can usually cope with increased volume) does not have the capacity to take all the flow.

Christchurch City Council staff are working around the clock to repair the system, but it will not be back to normal till early next week.

"Because we had pipes in stock we were able to start on reconstruction immediately. We are thankful to residents who informed us promptly of the situation," said Walter Lewthwaite, Wastewater Engineer.

Residents are advised to avoid any recreational activities in the river until the pipe is repaired. There will be some sewage spills into the Heathcote River affecting the area downstream from Fisher Avenue/Eastern Terrace to Ferrymead.

The Regional Council and the Medical Officer of Health have been informed.
