Christchurch City Council Media Release Friday 25 June 1999

Residents’ Survey shows views on Council’s performance

Between sixty to eighty per cent of people saw a majority of Council services (12 of 17) as good or very good value for money.

The proportion of people who thought we getting very good value for money increased for water supply, refuse collection and disposal, parks and playing fields, swimming pools and stadiums, The Town Hall, public libraries, and events and festivals.

The survey is part of the annual consultation programme to help finalise the annual plan.

While the survey showed increasing concern about roading and traffic congestion, the new shuttle bus has quickly become one of the more valued services. Kerbside recycling is very popular with 90 per cent of people saying they were satisfied, or very satisfied with this new service.

Only 18 per cent thought there were services that the Council does now that it should not provide. Only 3 per cent of respondents thought the planned Millennium festivities should be cut.

The survey showed leisure activities were popular. Seventy per cent visited a Council library, 96 per cent visited a park and 81 per cent of children visited a swimming pool.

The 1999 Annual Residents Survey was conducted between 20 March and 18 April 1999 by the National Research Bureau Ltd. The margin of error at the 90% confidence level is three per cent and 759 residents were asked 87 questions in face to face interviews. When comparing results from one year to the next, a difference of just over 4% is statistically significant. The survey has been run since 1991.
