Christchurch City Council Media Release Thursday 25 March 1999

QEII Park Stadium Reroof in time for FIFA World Youth Cup

Reroofing of the Christchurch City Council’s Queen Elizabeth II Park stadium will start on site at the end of the month with completion scheduled for June 1999.

The reroofing work is part of the pool redevelopment and stadium grandstand project. With some of the FIFA World Youth Cup games being played at the QEII Park Stadium in November 1999, this work has been programmed to allow for the construction of facilities, such as hospitality suites and weather protection for spectators, prior to this event.

"The FIFA World Youth Cup in November will be an exciting time for New Zealand soccer. It will bring international focus to Christchurch and a huge influx of overseas teams and visitors. In order to attract high profile international events such as this we need to ensure the facilities at QEII Park are up to international standards."

Cr Graham Condon

Chair, Parks and Recreation Committee

The reroofing work includes the following:

Demolition of the existing stadium roof and truss cladding

Installation of fire protection, pipework and sprinklers

Installation of new roof cladding, truss cladding and gutter

Repair, surface preparation and painting of steel truss members

At its meeting today the Council awarded Naylor Love Canterbury Ltd the building contract for this work. The contractor’s tender of $591,723.00 came within the approved budget for the work. The company has experience in this area of work as the main contractor on the Council’s Centennial Leisure Centre project which is due for completion next month, and having recently completed the ‘Splash Palace Southland Aquatic Centre’ in Invercargill.

The remaining stages of the Pools Redevelopment project will be the subject of a separate report to Council in February 2000. This includes a new ten-lane, 51 metre competition pool and a new leisure pool complex in the area occupied by the existing 50 metre pool.
