"Many houses in Christchurch have spa pools without adequate fencing around them and were worried that children might be at risk", says Chairperson of the Committee, Councillor Anna Crighton.
The Fencing of Swimming Pools Act 1987 states that spa pools are the same as swimming pools and must be fenced if outside.
"We are also concerned that there are spa pools and swimming pools being sold without the buyers being told of or given any information of the necessary fencing requirements", says Councillor Crighton.
The Council provides brochures to all pool retailers in the city about the pool fencing requirements and regulations. These are also available from all Council service centres.
"Many spa pools have hard top covers that may even be lockable. But this is not enough", says Councillor Crighton. Lockable covers do not comply with the Act regulations because they may be accidentally left off, leaving a potential hazard for small children.
