Christchurch City Council Media Release 3 June 1999

New Brighton Library looking ship-shape

New Brighton's state-of-the-art library, located in the Christchurch City Council 's New Brighton Pier Terminus Building, will open on Saturday 24 July.

As the library continues to take shape, plans are being made to celebrate the opening. "We see this as a huge milestone for Canterbury Public Library and New Brighton's community, and we certainly intend to mark the occasion," said Sasha Bowers, the library's Promotions & Publications Co-ordinator.

As part of the Canterbury Public Library network, New Brighton Library will offer a great range of books, magazines and music, as well as a number of unique features.

Pipeline is a youth facility with interactive entertainment including simulation games, videos and visual displays.

The Media Centre is an exciting concept, which will give groups and individuals the opportunity to use computers, and learn how to make the most of new technology.

The PAD – Play and Display – is an area designed to host activities and exhibits for children and the community.

The arrangement of books will also be different. Instead of being arranged according to the traditional numbering system, items on related subjects will be organised into 'living rooms'. "The idea is that things will be easier to find," said Sasha Bowers. "Books and other items like videos which deal with the same subject will all be in one place."

Other things that will make New Brighton Library stand out are its extended seven-day service, listening posts so that customers can enjoy music while they read, and of course the stunning sea views.

The New Brighton Pier Terminus Building is within the project's budget of $4.5million (which includes site works, fees, landscaping, carparking, library fit out and reno mattress (coastal protection)). In addition to the library there is commercial space, within the building, which is to be leased.
