Christchurch City Council Media Release Monday 22 February 1999

Library Director from Texas visiting city libraries

The Director of San Antonio Public Library, June Garcia, is in Christchurch for talks with Sue Sutherland, Libraries Manager of Canterbury Public Library.

Services to youth will be on the agenda, as well as information technology planning and development for the 21st century.

June Garcia has been a prime mover in the recent publication of a planning tool for IT strategy produced by the Public Library Association of America.

"June’s visit is very timely," said Sue Sutherland. "Canterbury Public Library is currently considering its youth services and IT developments of the future."

As well as discussing library service delivery, June and Sue will be finalising their paper on 'Public library administrators in the political arena', which they are writing for the International Network of Public Libraries. This network is funded by the Bertelsmann Foundation in Germany, and both Canterbury Public Library and San Antonio Public Library were selected as being libraries demonstrating best practice in their respective countries. The founding principle of the network is to share best practice for the general improvement of public library services worldwide.

San Antonio Public Library is the 9th largest public library system in the USA offering a wide range of services to a multi racial community with a predominance of Hispanic cultures.
