Christchurch City Council Media Release 18 March 1999

Heritage Trail Upgrade Underway

Christchurch City Council Coast Care staff would like to advise residents that the lower section of the Heritage Trail Walkway between the Taylors Mistake Road and Hobson Bay, Taylors Mistake, will be closed until mid April.

New stairs and handrails are being installed on this steep and poorly formed section of the Trail, to make it safer for walkers to enjoy the views. The rest of the Heritage Trail, from Taylors Mistake to Sumner remains open.

The scenic Heritage Trail allows a return trip for walkers following the Sumner Head to Taylors Mistake coastal walkway. The Heritage Trail leaves Hobson Bay and climbs rapidly through houses and bush to the Taylors Mistake Road. It then ascends across open land to a saddle overlooking Sumner Valley. The Trail then heads steeply downhill to meet Heberden Avenue near the corner of Wiggins Street. The full circuit, using the two tracks, can be completed in less than two hours and provides dramatic coastal scenery, including Pegasus Bay and Godley Head, with opportunities to view wildlife on the nearby cliffs.

"We’d also like to remind walkers that dogs are not permitted on the Heritage Trail as the walkway crosses private land," says Rodney Chambers of Coast Care.

The actual reopening date will be advised closer to completion of the upgrade.
