Christchurch City Council Media Release 21 June 1999

Four Ships Court Plaques to Leave the Square Temporarily

As work in the Stage 4 area (south-west corner of the Square and in front of the Cathedral) of the Christchurch City Council redevelopment of Cathedral Square progresses, arrangements have been made for the uplifting of the plaques in Four Ships Court.

Work on uplifting the plaques, dedicated to Ngai Tahu, Ngati Mamoe, Waitaha, the Pre-Adamites, the Canterbury Association of Surveyors and to the passengers on board the "first four ships" from England to Christchurch, commenced today, Monday 21 June.

The uplifting will be undertaken by J.Tait Ltd and could take up to 3 days to carry out. The plaques will be assessed for restoration purposes and any necessary work undertaken.

Depending upon the amount of restoration work required, it is likely that the plaques will be returned in September. They are to be mounted on raised planter boxes which will be placed around the Four Ships Court Trees.

The Square Redevelopment Project is on schedule for completion in October 1999.
