The Cranleigh Barton Drawing Award
29 June 8 August 1999
Finalists from the 1999 Cranleigh Barton Drawing Award have been selected from almost 250 entries received in this years competition, and will be exhibited at the Robert McDougall Art Gallery from 29 June to 8 August. The recipient of the 1999 Award, who will win $5000, and the two merit award winners who each receive $500 in drawing materials (generously sponsored by The Drawing Room in association with Staedtler), will be announced at the exhibition opening on Monday, 28 June.
The purpose of the Award is to recognise excellence in drawing, and to raise its status in visual arts education and practice. Works from around the country will be represented in the exhibition, illustrating the breadth and diversity of drawing within New Zealand. Featuring a variety of styles from realism to expressionism, the exhibition also provides an interesting mix of up-and-coming and established artists.
The Cranleigh Barton Drawing Award has been made possible through the legacy of early Canterbury watercolourist, Cranleigh H. Barton (1890 1975), and is jointly presented by the Robert McDougall Art Gallery, Canterbury Museum and Guardian Trust (executors of the Barton estate).
The Cranleigh Barton Drawing Award will be of interest to both art practitioners and art observers alike. Dont miss this exciting opportunity to view diverse approaches to the art of drawing.
