Christchurch City Council Media Release Friday 25 June 1999

Ethnic diversity makes Christchurch a better place

The Annual Residents’ survey shows the majority of Christchurch people are accepting of increasing ethnic diversity.

Eighty Five per cent of respondents said they thought ethnic diversity made their City the same or better. The survey respondents said that they thought it made Christchurch a much better place to live (11%) a better place to live (35%), or made no difference to their lives (39%). Only 14 per cent thought increasing ethnic diversity made Christchurch a worse place for them to live.

The 1999 Annual Residents Survey was conducted between 20 March and 18 April 1999 by the National Research Bureau Ltd. The margin of error at the 90% confidence level is three per cent and 759 residents were asked 87 questions in face to face interviews. When comparing results from one year to the next, a difference of just over 4% is statistically significant. The survey has been run since 1991.
