Christchurch City Council Media Release Wednesday 18 August 1999

Council Gets Power

Christchurch street lighting and power for all Christchurch City Council services will come from Meridian. The agreement with the retail power company is effective immediately and follows a competitive tender process. The annual cost of electricity to the Council will be approximately $5.9 million, inclusive of all delivery charges.

David Close, Chairman of Strategy and Resources, welcomed the agreement, "it’s a satisfactory outcome and we’re pleased with the agreement the total cost of which is equivalent to what we were paying two years ago, and significantly less than the indicative cost offered to us by our previous supplier. This agreement with Meridian will assists us in keeping our rates as the lowest of any major New Zealand city, and will help us to continue to provide residents with top quality service at a reasonable cost."

The new agreement is initially for 12 months, with further rights of renewal at the Council’s discretion.
