Christchurch City Council Media Release Tuesday 12 January 1999

City Plan update

After years of painstaking work the decisions on submissions on Christchurch’s proposed City Plan are due out to the public by early April.

Christchurch City Council senior planner Ivan Thomson says one of the big issues is how much residential land is provided for.

The proposed plan identifies 460 hectares for development but the Council has heard evidence, based on new population predictions, that up to 600 hectares more are needed.

"Whether the Council accepts this evidence in coming weeks remains to be seen," Mr Thomson says.

The Council is expected to adopt decisions on the City Plan at its February meeting. Once adopted, it will take six weeks for Christchurch’s new City Plan to be printed and released to the public.

Senior planner Fiona Hill says it will be quite different to that originally notified in June 1995, due to the hundreds of submissions which have been made.

"It will be an incredibly important document for the city and even if people are not building or anything themselves, they should look at the City Plan to see if there are changes which might affect them," she says.
