Christchurchs millennium event coming together well.
With just over three weeks to go until New Years Eve, plans for Christchurchs millennium celebrations are progressing well.
The sheer size and nature of the event has required considerable and detailed co-ordination, but the event is coming together really well, says the events producer, Michelle Beckett. It hasnt been entirely plain sailing along the way, but fortunately, unlike many millennium events throughout the world were still on track and looking forward to a great night.
In the Park 2000 is the biggest one-off event ever staged in the South Island and the organisation required to produce it is phenomenal, far more so than if the same event were held on any other night of the year, says Ms Beckett. Detailed parking and traffic management plans have been created to cope with the number of people expected to attend, while significant planning has gone into staging, sound, lighting, security, fireworks and entertainment.
Highlights of In the Park 2000 include two fireworks shows, a dramatic Maori cultural opening and a performance by Dave Dobbyn, who recently released his critically acclaimed best of album. Other well-known performers taking part in the event include comedian Mark Wright, childrens television presenter Jason Gunn, 60s pop icon Ray Columbus and top Christchurch band, Zed. Christchurch is in store for a very exciting and memorable night, says Ms Beckett.
