Christchurch City Council Media Release Friday 16 July 1999

Cathedral Square stalls roll out

Cathedral Square loses some of its colourful characters today as the stalls move out to allow the Redevelopment. The re-tendering for the stall sites in the Square closed on Monday 12 July and unfortunately stalls are unlikely to return to the Square till November 1999.

"It’s unfortunate that all the stalls have to go, but with power being removed, and the work that is going on stalls can’t really trade for health and safety reasons," said Bill Morgan Property Officer.

The Cathedral Square upgrade is already improving the way the Square looks, and will maintain the area as the City’s focus, but in the short term there is some inconvenience and this is one aspect of it.

"The stall holders have been excellent over this issue, originally they were all going to leave on 1 March, but after some discussions and representations we worked around them and they have stayed. We informed them in February that they would have to leave the Square by 16 June. We’ve let them stay as long as possible, but with the power cable being worked on this weekend none of them can stay any longer", said Bill Morgan.

There have been 13 applications for stall sites in the Square. A decision on who will get the sites will be made in the next few weeks.
