Christchurch City Council Media Release Tuesday, 13 July 1999

All aboard at New Brighton Library

Over 30,000 books and other items will be shifted into New Brighton's new library building later this week.

The library opens in the Christchurch City Council's New Brighton Pier Building on Saturday 24 July. An official opening ceremony will take place at 10am, which the public is welcome to join, followed by an exciting weekend of events for all ages.

With the opening less than two weeks away, the library is rapidly taking shape. While landscaping around the building continues, the inside is a hive of activity. Top priority at the moment is to get all the shelving in place for the delivery of books on Thursday and Friday this week.

"It's an enormous task," said Susan Coleman, Community Librarian at New Brighton Library. "The old library closed last Saturday and the team is currently working to ensure that the new library is fully operational by the 24th."

The books will be arranged in 'living rooms' rather than according to the Dewey Decimal classification system. "The idea is that items will be easier to find," said Susan Coleman. "Books and other material like videos which deal with the same subject will all be in one living room."

Another huge step is the setting up of the Media Centre which will provide customers with Internet, email and computer facilities. Work is also underway to equip Pipeline – an interactive entertainment area – with PlayStations, computer games and videos.
