Christchurch City Council Media Release Thursday 11 June 1998

CHRISTCHURCH RESIDENTS WANT TO KEEP THEIR ROADS

1998 Annual Residents’ Survey

The results of the 1998 Annual Survey of Residents show that 71% of residents oppose the transfer of the ownership and control of City Streets from the Council to a company. Only 8% of Christchurch residents support what has been proposed - that city roads be transferred to a company run on a commercial basis.

"This survey result confirms the strength of community feeling on the issue of roading reform, and we will continue to challenge the government until they settle on reform that is fair to the people of Christchurch and New Zealand", says Vicki Buck, the Mayor of Christchurch.

"We have insisted from the very beginning that any roading reform in New Zealand should be subject to full public consultation. We welcomed the news last week that the policy advisers are doing some more thinking on this issue but it is important that they get it right," she said today.
