The opening, this week, of new creche facilities at Pioneer Stadium marks a milestone in the development project on the Pioneer Stadium site which will result in the completion of an aqua-leisure complex next April.
The previous creche facilities could accommodate 24 children but with a maximum stay of two hours because of the lack of an outdoor area.
The new creche provides indoor and outdoor facilities for children aged 0-5 years old.
It is an exciting time for us, moving into a brand new space and being able to offer the increased services which are being asked for. The operating hours of 9.30 - 11.30am have been extended to 8.45am - 1pm. We are now catering for 26 children which will be extended to 36 when the aqua-leisure complex is finished, says Sally Latham, Community Adviser, Chrisctchurch City Council.
The original creche, established some 15 years ago, was a partnership between the parents using the stadium and stadium management. It relied on parents providing rostered supervision in an indoor area. Sally advises,
Up to the end of term 3, two weeks ago, we required the assistance of one parent helper to supplement our staffing - now its great if parents want to help but with an additional staff member we are no longer reliant on that. contd.
The aqua-leisure centre will include a five lane 25 metre training pool, swirl pool, sauna and steam rooms and a 312 square metre leisure pool which will feature the first wave pool for Christchurch, various water features such a rain-drop unit, continuous lazy river channel and bubble pool. Also included in the project are a weight gymnasium and an aerobics gymnasium.
