Nada Beardsley
Literacy Award
for Canterbury Public Library
Canterbury Public
Library has received the Nada Beardsley Literacy Award for its highly successful Books
For Babies Project.
Books for Babies Project:
- is a scheme whereby a package containing a
board book, information about the importance of reading, and a library enrolment form is
delivered to every new baby in Christchurch, and its parents.
- has been operating since 1990
- since its inception, around 40,000 packs
have been distributed.
The Nada Beardsley Award:
- This Award is made in recognition of an
individual or individuals who have made a significant contribution to literacy in
Canterbury.
- It is named after Nada Beardsley, a former
District Reading Advisor for Canterbury who was also responsible for developing LARIC
(Later
- Reading In Service Course), who died in
1989.
- The Award is administered by the
Canterbury Reading Association
