Christchurch City Council Media Release Thursday 20 August 1998

INTERNATIONAL WHEELCHAIR GAMES FOR CHRISTCHURCH

Christchurch is to host a major international wheelchair games meet next year. The International Stoke Mandeville Wheelchair Games will be held outside England for the first time, thanks to the excellent facilities available in Christchurch for wheelchair sportspeople.

Christchurch is already preparing to host the 1998 International Paralympic World Swimming Champs and the 1999 World Netball Champs, and a number of sporting events for the year 2000.

The event is estimated to inject $4-5 million into the local economy (depending on numbers attending). Approximately 600 to 800 participants and support staff are expected to visit the city for the event, which will be of direct benefit to local hotels, cafes and restaurants and entertainments.

"Christchurch is firmly placing itself on the map as a world class venue for international sporting events," says Peter Walls, Senior Facilities Adviser at the Christchurch City Council. "This will be a great opportunity for the city to show visitors from around the world what an excellent venue we can provide for their sporting events, and in return we can enjoy the positive spin-off holding these events has for local businesses and the economy."

No exact date has been determined yet but it is expected to be held sometime in October/November 1999.
