Contract for Swimming and Leisure pools at Pioneer Sports Stadium Awarded

The Christchurch City Council has awarded Mainzeal Property and Construction Ltd the $5.6m building contract for the pools development at Pioneer Sports Stadium.

The Pioneer development includes a five lane 25 metre training pool, swirl pool, sauna and steam rooms and a 312 square metre leisure pool including a wave machine. Also included in the project is a weights gymnasium, aerobics gymnasium and a creche. Additions and upgrading of the existing stadium and administrative areas will also be carried out to ensure compliance with the NZ Building Code including access for disabled people.

Construction on the site is to start early April with completion scheduled for April 1999.

The Pioneer development is a part of the Council’s provision for leisure and fitness pools facilities in Christchurch. Also included in this provision is a new centre to be developed on the Centennial Pool site. Tenders for this project will close on 14 April.

This development will include a six lane fitness pool, leisure pool, swirl pool, sauna and steam rooms, a fitness centre and a landscaped outdoor area to be known as Elsie Locke Park.

The leisure pools at both complexes are to include such features as a raindrop unit, a continuous lazy river channel and a bubble pool.

"These have been long awaited assets for the people of Christchurch. I am sure the facilities provided by the leisure centres will give immense pleasure to the whole family as well as the fitness enthusiast." (Cr Ron Wright)
