Beckenham Sculpture to be Unveiled Friday

A sculpture by well know New Zealand sculptor Jeff Thomson is to be unveiled in Beckenham on Friday 18 December, 8.00am, corner of Colombo/Strickland streets (near BP station).

Made entirely out of corrugated iron, the sculpture is of the head and shoulders of a person and approximately 3.5metres high.

In a bid to help boost interest in the shops and features in the area, the Spreydon/Heathcote Community Board gave $3500 to the Beckenham Business Association for the sculpture.

This is the first outdoor display of Jeff Thomson’s work in Christchurch, who is known nationally and increasingly internationally for his unique works made from recycled corrugated iron. His work includes an iron sculpture of an HQ Holden currently in Te Papa, and in the 1980s his sculptures of animals, again made from corrugated iron, were also popular.
