Christchurch City Council Media Release 8 October 1998

Construction work reprogrammed for
International Paralympic World Swimming Championships

Work in Stage 2 (south east corner) of the Christchurch City Council’s redevelopment of Cathedral Square has been reprogrammed in the run up to and during the International Paralympic World Swimming Championships (8-18 October).

Approximately 700 athletes will be in Christchurch for the Championships, 500 of whom will be staying at the Millennium and Heritage Hotels in the Square.

The Council, together with the main contractor, BD Construction Ltd, has worked with the Hotels to ensure ease of access to the Hotels during this time and adequate capacity for the buses which will be transporting the athletes to and from the Championships being held at QEII Park.

Construction work during this period will be redirected to the Stage 3 area (north east corner) of The Square and other parts of Stage 2.

While completion of the Stage 2 work is now scheduled for early November overall completion of this year’s work is unaffected and scheduled for early December.
