The Christchurch City Council-organised Showtime Canterbury festival has won a prestigious national award. The two-week long festival, which last year replaced Cup Carnival Week, was judged Best Large Event in the Southern Region by delegates at the New Zealand Events Conference currently being held in Wellington.
Perry Walker, who is attending the conference on behalf of the Christchurch City Councils Events Team, says To be recognised by your peers in the industry is really the highest accolade. Its a great achievement and acknowledges the excellent community co-operation and involvement which made Showtime Canterbury such an outstanding success in just its first year.
The festival celebrates Canterburys lifestyle and showcases its attractions at a time when thousands of visitors flock to the region for the national trotting, galloping and greyhound championship races and the Canterbury A & P Show.
The Council is also in the running for a New Zealand Tourism Award for its SummerTimes festival, which is a finalist in the events category for the second time. The awards will be announced on Friday evening at a function at the Christchurch Convention Centre.
