MEMORIAL FOR DIANA

The Christchurch City Council will be hosting a Memorial for Diana, Princess of Wales on Saturday at 7 pm before the televised funeral.

The Memorial for the Princess of Wales will take place in Cathedral Square and involve a candlelit vigil, and hymns. Elton John’s new lyrics for Candle in the Wind will be sung as well as other appropriate music. Children’s choirs and prominent Christchurch musicians will feature in the hour long memorial.

Cathedral Square will host a large cross, a temporary memorial, and flowers placed there will be distributed to hospitals and charities by Altrusa International. The cross will stay in the Square till Sunday and flowers can be left at any time.

Members of the public will be able to pay their respects at the Memorial and leave in time to see the funeral on television beginning at 8.30pm.

Candles will be sold and any profits will go to the Aids Foundation.

The Christchurch City Council Lichfield Parking Building will be open and free parking is available until midnight. Council staff have handled large numbers of calls and thousands of residents have filled in five condolence books.

The Mayor, Councillors and Council staff are also clearly saddened and upset at the tragic loss of the Princess of Wales.
