CHRISTCHURCH CHILDREN'S SURVEY BACKS U.N. FINDING
A Christchurch City Council survey of over 1000 people supports the recently released UN report that indicates New Zealand children are suffering from economic reforms.
48% of the Christchurch respondents with children experienced financial strain, all or most of the time, compared to 28.5% of those without children.
"These results are of great concern," says Lyn Campbell the Children's Advocate, "However Christchurch is ahead in looking at these issues and we are focussing on children to improve their quality of life."
Some households have had to go without a meal to feed their children, or go without a meal for the whole family at some time, according to the research, says Lyn Campbell.
Full survey results will be available soon.
The Christchurch City Council's current research includes the needs of youth in the city, refugees; early childhood education services, out of school care and recreation and forming indicators to measure the well being of people in the city.
