Christchurch City Council Media Release 21 September 1997

‘Global Steps’ showcases a world of dance .

Global Steps, 2.00pm & 8.00pm, Saturday 4 October, James Hay Theatre

Fasten your seatbelts for a spectacular journey of dance from around the world! Global Steps, an exciting two hour cultural extravaganza, will reflect the truly universal nature of dance.

A highlight of the Christchurch Festival of Dance, Global Steps will take it’s audience on a journey crossing continents and hopping from island to island, showcasing dance from Tonga, Israel, India, Scotland, Spain, China, France, the Cook Islands, Papau New Guinea, Niue, the USA, Ireland, Fiji, Taiwan, Malaysia, Egypt, South America, the Philippines and New Zealand.

A Maori welcome will begin the round-the-world journey. Many of the countries represented will tell a story through their dance, while other nationalities will perform dances traditionally used for special occasions. Highlights will include a colourful lion dance from China, an exciting spear dance from Tonga and a sensuous belly dance from Egypt.

The majority of the performers taking part in Global Steps live in New Zealand but come from overseas and enjoy sharing their country’s traditional dances and costumes with others. While most of the performers are adults a number of children will be involved in the show.

There will be two performances of Global Steps, at 2.00pm and 8.00pm on Saturday 4 October at the James Hay Theatre. Tickets, which have been priced to cover costs, are $10 for adults and $5 for school aged children. Bookings are essential and can be made through Ticketek outlets.
