A new heritage trail highlighting Christchurch’s many connections with the Antarctic is being opened tomorrow (Wednesday 14 May) by Vicki Buck, some penguins and fully kitted out Antarctic Explorers.

The Christchurch City Council in collaboration with the Antarctic Heritage Trust and Trust Bank Canterbury have produced a heritage trail map for members of the public and groups to visit all of our City’s links with Antarctica.

The Trail contains eight individual sites, including Lyttelton, where Scott’s expeditions set out from, and the Airport where Operation Deep Freeze has been located.

The launch of the trail will include unveiling of a plaque by Mayor Vicki Buck under the statue of Robert Falcon Scott.
