Christchurch City Council Media Release 17 December 1997

All-Kiwi line up a first for rock event.

An entirely New Zealand line up for the annual SummerRock concert at North Hagley Park on Saturday 7 March has been announced by the Christchurch City Council’s Events Team. The all-Kiwi line up is a first for the event, which in the past has featured overseas acts such as Hunters and Collectors, Jimmy Barnes and Diesel.

SummerRock has become one of the most popular and eagerly anticipated events within the SummerTimes festival. This year the rock extravaganza runs over approximately five hours and features five bands.

SummerTimes publicity co-ordinator, Katie Macbeth, says “SummerRock has featured overseas acts for the past five years. With the abundance of great Kiwi bands around now it’s high time to celebrate the talent we’ve got right here in New Zealand”.

The Mutton Birds, one of this country’s finest rock exports of recent years, headline the concert. Their albums, ‘The Mutton Birds’, ‘Salty’ and ‘Envy of Angels’, have won the acclaim of both the critics and the public. Currently based in London, the band are looking forward to the opportunity of performing on home turf again.

Headless Chickens precede The Mutton Birds. The Auckland-based band recently released an album of new material entitled ‘Greedy’. The first three SummerRock acts all hail from Christchurch. The Bats, launching their ‘best of’ CD at the time of the concert, take to the stage after performances by The Stereo Bus and The Puffins.
