Christchurch City Council Media Release Thursday 27 February 1997

COUNCIL FIND WIGRAM RISK TOO HIGH

The Christchurch City Council has decided they are not able to commit ratepayer funds to support an aviation estate at Wigram.

The Council discussed the matter for six hours last night (Wednesday) analysing comprehensive financial reports.

"Council decided that the risk was too high to commit ratepayers funds because of the length of time that the resource consent process will take," said Vicki Buck, Christchurch Mayor. "Ultimately we came to the conclusion that the risk was just too high. There are no resource consents for general aviation and the time delay necessary in order to get consent to allow flying to the numbers necessary could take up to five years, assuming there were appeals all along the way."

"We are pleased that Ngai Tahu is pursuing the Aviation Estate concept and we are providing them with all our research and feasibility study which show positive things about the proposal," said Vicki Buck.

"It has been positive working with Ngai Tahu, and our discussions have been constructive," she said.
