Christchurch City Council Media Release Friday, 24 October 1997

NEW LEISURE POOL EXPECTS 10,000 VISITORS IN FIRST TWO WEEKS

The first Christchurch wave and leisure pool at Pioneer Stadium is likely to have 1,500 visitors a day for the first few weeks if the experience of Upper Hutt and New Plymouth is anything to go by.

Councillor Ron Wright, Chairman of Council’s Projects and Property Committee, is convinced that the new wave and leisure pool will be a huge success here.

“Christchurch residents will flock to the new Pioneer facility. Upper Hutt leisure pool had 3,250 people in the first two days, and around 1,000 per day in the first year, while New Plymouth still has 1,000 people per day after four years of operation. Christchurch has been missing out” says Ron Wright.

The new facility, with a 312 metre square wave pool and five lane fitness training pool, has parking and other facilities to cope with these expected numbers.

Tenders for construction open on 29 October and close 19 November - and the Pioneer Wave Pool is due to open in December 1998 in time for Christmas holidays.
