This is the first childrens version of a Council Plan in New Zealand, and perhaps the world. (Certainly we are not aware of any other childrens contributions to such a plan and an internet search has failed to turn anything up).
All form 1 and 2 children in Christchurch were invited to participate. Of the 73 Christchurch Schools invited 49 have asked for kits. 4200 copies of the Plan have been sent out so far.
If this is successful the Council intends to involve all schools next year.
The Christchurch City Council Draft Plan (for adults) :1997 Edition is currently in the community for consultation. Last year there were 259 adult submissions, it is expected that we will receive at least 3000 childrens ones, probably as high as 4000, well over ten times the number of adults submissions.
One school Chisnallwood Intermediate asked for 600 copies of the children’s version of the plan.
The Children’s version is focussed on key questions about the City and what children feel is good and needs improvement.
The submissions will be collated and made into a report for Council to consider along with the adult submissions in June/July.
Some children are likely to present comments orally to the Council.
