Bequests for City Library

Sue Sutherland, Libraries Manager is pleased to announce that Canterbury Public Library has recently received 2 bequests. A bequest for $3000.00 to Fendalton Community Library has been received from Mrs Margret Anne Pana. A second bequest for 300 pounds sterling has been received from Miss Barbara Denise Gerard who lived in England.

Mrs Pana was a long standing member of the Fendalton Library. Under the terms of the bequest, this money is to be spent for the benefit of the staff at Fendalton Library. The staff have asked that the money be spent on a piece of art work or special piece of furniture when the new Fendalton Library is built. Planning for the new Library will commence this year.

Miss Gerard was born in Fendalton in 1911 and spent most of her childhood on her father’s farm "Snowden" in North Canterbury. She moved to England in the fifties, and studied book production and graphic design, as well as record and archive repairs. Miss Gerard, who was also known for her landscape painting, died last year. Her bequest will be used to purchase a piece of art work for the Central Library to mark completion of the current refurbishment programme in October.
