The aim of Carter Group Heritage Week is
to create an annual celebration of our heritage buildings and places
by involving the people of Christchurch in a series of social, cultural
and educational events, which focus on the value of the Citys
built heritage.
"More than Bricks and Mortar"
2002 marked the 10th Anniversary of Heritage Week. Heritage Week began in 1992 and its purpose has been to raise heritage awareness within the city by increasing the profile of heritage buildings, places and objects and the people who have played a significant part in our City's development. Over the years this has been undertaken through a series of seminars, events, walks and discussions designed to prompt thought and appreciation of Christchurch's cultural heritage.
This year saw a record 280 events run by 90 groups and organisations. There was the introduction of the Gargoyle Competition and the production of a Commemorative Programme to mark the last 10 years of Heritage within the city.
10th Anniversary Carter Group Heritage Week was again a great success. Thank you to all the groups and individuals who contributed their time, resources and expertise to run fantastic events.
The culture
of a community is what makes it unique. It comprises a continuation
of the natural physical elements and constructed landmarks, of personal
memories and histories, of community attitudes and values. The elements
which we choose to take into the future dictate our cultural landscapes.
