26. 2. 97

SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT OF THE CHAIRMAN OF THE

FENDALTON/WAIMAIRI COMMUNITY BOARD

5.3 AVONHEAD BUS ROUTES/BUS STOPS (Cont'd)

As requested by the Board, the Waimairi Ward Members undertook further consultation with local residents on 19 February 1997 to review a number of issues regarding the revised No. 21 Merrin and new No. 24 Hyde Park bus services which were due to commence on 3 March 1997.

Strong opposition to the introduction of the service and of the consultation procedures used by the Canterbury Regional Council was re-emphasised by the residents. Safety concerns over the presence and operation of buses using the route were again raised and the basis used in determining the need for the services was challenged.

Irrespective of the contractual arrangements associated with the scheduled commencement of the services on 3 March, the residents attending the meeting made it quite clear that the new and revised bus services were not wanted.

The unanimous outcome of the meeting was to refer the concerns raised by the residents of Kedleston Drive and Withells Road to the Canterbury Regional Council for its urgent and legal consideration. This is to occur at that Council's Resource Services Committee on 26 February at which the Board and a number of residents will have speaking rights.

The Board therefore does not have a recommendation to make to the Council at this time on the positioning of a number of bus stops required to service the routes.

Recommendation: That the information be received.

BARBARA STEWART

CHAIRMAN
