Plans advance for new Centre

The Beckenham Service Centre
The Beckenham Service Centre: site of the planned new Library/Service Centre and Learning Centre.

Planning for the new south Christchurch Library/Service Centre and Learning Centre is now well under way, according to Ian MacKenzie, leader of the Project Control Group.

The combined Centre will be built on Council land where the Beckenham Service Centre is now sited.

It has been proposed that the new building, which will incorporate the best features of the Fendalton and New Brighton Libraries, will also be a "sustainable" building in terms of energy use and waste minimisation and the application of any other appropriate environmental features.

The building, which has the potential to become a vibrant community focal point in south Christchurch, will incorporate a village concept with spaces provided for community gatherings, small scale entertainment, learning, meetings, browsing, taking coffee and listening to music.

The Learning Centre, which will be a first in New Zealand, will be made possible by Ministry of Education funds available because of the closure of Sydenham School.

It is proposed that the computer Learning Centre will cater to the needs of primary school students and will also be used by community groups in the evening.

The Learning Centre will be managed by an independent trust.

The new Library will serve a population of 45,000 to 50,000 and have a starting collection of 50,000 to 60,000 books. The existing library services at Spreydon and St Martins will continue.

In addition to the Library and Learning Centre, civic administration will have a high profile in the new building, with the Advocacy Team (currently working in the existing Service Centre) also based there, making it a civic centre — a local point for local democracy.
