Funding for commmunity sport and leisure
Funding schemes that are administered through the Advocacy Team at the Beckenham Service Centre include the Christchurch City Council Community Development Scheme and the Hillary Commission's Community Sport Fund.
At the moment these run concurrently with an opening date of 1 February and closing date of the last Friday in March each year.
The Community Sport Fund was established so that a range of community groups and organisations involved in sport, fitness and physical leisure can apply for funding to increase participation in physical activities.
The Christchurch City Council Community Development Scheme seeks to support communities to plan, organise and carry out initiatives that reflect their needs and aspirations.
The emphasis is on empowering and enabling those who are deprived of power and resources.
Seminars are held to assist sport and community groups in their applications to both these funding schemes.
Recently a total of $72,670 was allocated to a wide range of non-profit groups in Spreydon-Heathcote. Some of the projects subsidised included coach, volunteer and leadership training, assistance with the development of a local newsletter, and support for local community events.
"It's great to see this money getting out to the grass roots; supporting initiatives at a very localised level", says the Chairperson of the Spreydon-Heathcote Community Funding Committee.
"We would like to encourage more community groups to apply."
