Cholmondeley Ave - a living street

Before

Recently the Council reconstructed Cholmondeley Avenue under its Kerb and Channel Renewal Programme.

This gave the Council the opportunity to resolve traffic and parking issues in the Avenue using the "Living Streets" philosophy.

Strong community support meant that road humps, road narrowing, angle and recessed parking bays were able to be constructed to address these issues, creating a narrow, slower and more attractive environment.

Community feedback has been very positive, stating that the reconstruction has achieved its objectives.

This project has further enhanced this beautiful tree-lined street.

The concept of Living Streets challenges the increasingly common assumption that streets are for cars and that those cars should therefore have automatic priority over people in all streets.

The Living Streets concept attempts to instil an ideal that streets should be designed or redesigned with the priority on living and community interaction, where residents, businesses, pedestrians and cyclists at the very least have equality with cars.

A Living Street encourages better driver behaviour, and discourages heavy trucks and through traffic.
