Annual awards to those who strengthen our local community

Each year, the Spreydon-Heathcote Community Board recognises some of the special people in our district who are working towards strengthening and developing our local community. By way of acknowledging some of the work that has been brought to their attention, the Board presents Community Service and Youth Awards (with Youth Awards being aimed at people aged under 25 years). Both Awards are presented to people who have contributed their time and energy to voluntary services benefiting residents or organisations in the Spreydon-Heathcote community, in one (or more) of the following areas:

  • Physical well-being
  • Children, youth and education
  • Physical environment
  • Social and economic well-being
The following are some examples of voluntary work undertaken by recent Award recipients: Youth Awards
  • Supervising holiday programmes
  • Work and deeds associated with the Girls Brigade, Girl Guides & Scouts
  • Working with youth
  • St John' 's Ambulance
  • Teacher aide work
Community Service Awards
  • Entertaining people in rest homes, hospitals, etc.
  • Community Watch patrols
  • Community centre work
  • Playgroup co-ordinator
  • Regularly assisting the local community constable's office
  • Teaching the Maori language
The Community Board is always trying to reach the "quiet achievers" who work endless voluntary hours in our community.

These are often the people who others rely on to get things done, but are sadly not recognised for their contributions, so we need to rely on YOU to let us know about them. If you do know of someone in your local community whom you feel deserves some recognition for their voluntary work, and would like more information regarding the awards, please contact the Community Secretary at the Beckenham Service Centre, telephone 332-3099.
