Preserving our past for future generations .. a celebration

Te Whatu-manawa Maoritanga O Rehua.

Representatives from the Rehua Marae Board of Trustees and the Shirley/Papanui Community Board are currently forming a joint committee to steer the establishment of an annual Heritage Award in Shirley and Papanui.

The joint committee is seeking to establish an annual award that reflects the unique characteristics of the area.

It is hoped that this award will stimulate a local interest and pride in the natural and man-made features, as well as the significance of family and community histories and how all these factors have shaped the community as it is today.

Rehua Marae and the Shirley/Papanui Community Board would like to invite the local community to celebrate at a local level. This project is currently in its development stages and is hoped to be officially launched during the annual Carter Group Heritage Week held in October 2001.

The categories will acknowledge and embrace the efforts of our children, as we wish to preserve the memories, stories and values of the past for future generations.

There will also be categories for initiatives that promote our history as well as the preserving and restoring of items, objects and/or buildings of historical significance.

The Christchurch Star will be covering the launch and presentation of this award — keep an eye out for information in this community publication delivered free to every home in Christchurch.
