Objectives for 2001/02

Mission

The Board aims to effectively meet the needs of the Burwood/Pegasus community by being responsive to local issues and working towards a sustainable, socially inclusive, safe and active community

Objectives and Performance Indicators

PARTICIPATION
1. Foster participation in community life and Community Board processes

  • Support established strategies and policies, including those for community and social well-being.
  • Hold consultative forums to provide input into the Council's Statement of Priority and Annual Plan and Budget process.
  • Pilot a residents' panel for feedback on the contribution of the Board and the Council to the Burwood/Pegasus area.
  • Provide time at each Community Board meeting for representatives of residents' groups to acquaint the Board with community issues.
  • Hold not less than two well represented meetings with all residents' groups in the community.
  • Facilitate the establishment of two new Residents' Associations.
  • Liaise with recognised residents' groups by appointing Board representatives who are to attend at least 50 percent of the assigned residents' group's meetings.
  • Report all significant issues and concerns raised through community consultation to the Council through the Board's monthly reports or by other means.
  • Implement the Board's communication plan annually.
  • Advertise and promote Community Service Awards to recognise the individual and group contributions to the community. Facilitate community participation in the joint Council/Housing New Zealand Limited Aranui Community Renewal Project.
  • Promote and encourage greater delegation from the Council to Community Boards.

SOCIAL WELL-BEING
2. Support social well-being in Burwood/Pegasus through appropriate programmes and facilities

  • Increase the number of neighbourhood support groups in our community and support Neighbourhood Week.
  • Publish community directories in 2001.
  • Support local recreation and leisure programmes, out of school programmes, and community childcare facilities.
  • Meet at least twice annually with local members of Parliament, Environment Canterbury Councillors, Police and other relevant statutory bodies.
  • Increase the use of community facilities.
  • Identify programmes and facilities that are effective in increasing social well-being.
  • Develop community governance principles with school communities to better meet the needs of children and youth.

CULTURAL ISSUES
3. Recognise the Treaty of Waitangi and cultural diversity in the community

  • Undertake culturally acceptable consultation procedures with tangata whenua.
  • Provide the opportunity for Board members and/or the community to participate in a workshop to increase their understanding of Treaty issues.
  • Consider and recognise the aspirations of all people and cultures in the Board's activities.

ENVIRONMENT
4. Encourage the protection and enhancement of the natural environment

  • Emphasize the importance of river, estuary, wetland and coastal park environments to our communities.
  • Advocate for environmental improvements to air, water, soil, drainage and waste disposal.
  • Enhance biodiversity in the Burwood/Pegasus area through tree planting and revegetation.
  • Promote further the Eco-Village project and sustainability principles to the community and the Council.
  • Support environmental projects and events, such as the Bexley Wetland Trust, the Travis Wetland Trust, Arbor Day, Clean Up the World and Coast Care.

ECONOMIC WELL-BEING
5. Promote economic well-being in the Burwood/Pegasus area

  • Assist with local employment initiatives and provide ongoing support to the PEEEPS Trust and other employment programmes.
  • Encourage vibrant business areas.
  • Build closer relationships with the business community.

LIVING
6. Advocate for safe, attractive and accessible living environment

  • Promote safer roads including provision of cycle and pedestrian access and facilities.
  • Advocate for the safety of children travelling to schools through the Cycle Safe and Safe Routes to School programmes.
  • Promote both real and perceived safety in public parks and reserves that meet community needs.
  • Support effective public transport facilities that meet community needs.
  • Seek opportunities for applying the Living Streets concept when road works are planned in the area.
  • The Board aims to effectively meet the needs of the Burwood/Pegasus community by being responsive to local issues, and working towards a sustainable, socially inclusive, safe and active community.
