Women in the Council Chamber

This Our City O-Tautahi exhibition, featuring Christchurch’s own “Women in the Council Chamber”, runs until 30 September. Initiated and co-ordinated by Cr Anna Crighton, the exhibition includes photographic portraits, recorded interviews and Council memorabilia. The Mayoral chain will also be on display, to celebrate our only woman mayor, Vicki Buck.

Eighty-nine years ago Ada Wells walked into the Council Chamber as our first woman Christchurch City Councillor. Since this time 38 more women have been elected to the City Council, contributing to – and benefiting from – the dramatic change in the position of women in local government. Today, half our councillors are women.

This exhibition is a celebration of these 39 women and the people who supported them.

  • Our City O-Tautahi is a City Council community exhibition and venue space on the corner of Oxford Tce and Worcester Blvd, by the Worcester St bridge. Exhibitions are open 10am-4pm, Mon-Sat, and admission is free.
