Neighbourhood Week grants

Applications opened earlier this month for funding from Christchurch City Council’s six urban community boards to support community activities for Neighbourhood Week 2006.

Running from 28 October to 5 November, Neighbourhood Week is all about getting to know the people who live close to you. It’s about saying hello to your neighbours, chatting to them over the fence, inviting them in for a cuppa or hosting a local gathering. A small subsidy is available through the city’s community boards to assist with these events. Applications close on 29 September.

Neighbourhood Week was started in Christchurch in 1998 to recognise the power of neighbourhoods to help address issues like loneliness, fear of crime, lack of security and isolation.

Past events that people have organised to mark the week have included barbecues, morning teas, street parties, shared dinners, working bees, family fun days, neighbourhood planting days, open days at local community centres and community gardens, and community walks. If it brings your neighbourhood together, then your local community board would like to hear from you.

  • Look for Neighbourhood Week leaflets at Council offices, Services Centres, and libraries or call 941 8999 to find out more. Every funding applicant has the opportunity to go in a draw to win a cruise with Lyttelton-based Sea Cruises – why not take your neighbours and get to know them even better.
