Record crowds for Cultural Fest

Last month's Christchurch Primary Schools Cultural Festival, supported by the City Council, drew a record over-all audience, with about 7200 people coming to the Town Hall to watch the schools' performances.

This year's theme was "Many faces, one voice ... Nga matatini, he teo kotahi".

Organiser Ali Nauman, of Creative Events Unlimited, said the festival, celebrating its 25th anniversary, had its first sell-out, at the Wednesday matinee, since moving to the Town Hall.

"This year's festival was a wonderfully vibrant celebration and joyful expression of cultural diversity in Canterbury, so fitting for our 25th anniversary," she said. "More than 2400 children who took part and made it a real landmark celebration."

With its origins based in a celebration of Maori culture, the festival has expanded to embrace the increasing diversity of multicultural Christchurch. It gives children an opportunity to showcase their performance and cultural heritage.
